Louisiana E-Bike Laws & Registration

Everything you need to know about riding electric bikes legally in Louisiana.

This guide is for general information only and is not legal advice. Always confirm current laws with official state and local sources.

E-Bike Classes in Louisiana

Class 1
Up to 20 mph
Pedal-assist only

Motor provides assistance only while pedaling. Stops assisting at 20 mph.

Class 2
Up to 20 mph
Pedal-assist OR throttle

Can use throttle-only or pedal-assist. Motor stops at 20 mph.

Class 3
Up to 28 mph
Pedal-assist only

Higher-speed pedal-assist. Louisiana law adds extra rules for Class 3 riders (helmets, age limits, and a speedometer).

Key Rules for Class 3 E-Bikes in Louisiana

Based on Louisiana statutes at the time of writing (including La. R.S. 32:1 definitions). Local ordinances and park rules can be more restrictive.

Who Can Ride

  • 12+ only for operating: riders under twelve years old may not operate a Class 3 e-bike. They can ride as passengers only if the bike is designed to carry them.
  • Helmet for everyone: all operators and passengers on Class 3 e-bikes must wear an approved bicycle helmet.
  • Speedometer required: Class 3 e-bikes must have a speedometer that shows speed in miles per hour.

Where You Can Ride

  • Roads & bike lanes: Class 3 e-bikes are generally treated like bicycles on public roads where bikes are allowed. Ride with traffic, obey traffic laws, and use lights at night.
  • Multi‑use paths & parks: cities and park systems can restrict or ban Class 3 bikes on certain paths. Always check posted signs or park websites before you ride.
  • Local rules first: New Orleans, Baton Rouge, Lafayette, and other cities may have additional e-bike ordinances. When in doubt, ride conservatively and look for posted guidance.

Do I Need to Register My E-Bike?

Good News!

No registration, license, or insurance required for Class 1, 2, or 3 e-bikes in Louisiana. E-bikes are classified as bicycles, not motor vehicles, as long as they meet the specifications above.

✓ General Requirements

  • Age limits: Riders under 12 cannot operate Class 3 e-bikes under state law. Some parks, rentals, or guided tours may set higher minimum ages (often 16+) for all e-bikes.
  • Helmets: Helmets are required for all operators and passengers on Class 3 e-bikes and for younger riders on traditional bikes. We strongly recommend a quality helmet for every rider, every ride.
  • Front white light after dark
  • Rear red reflector/light

✗ NOT Required

  • No driver's license
  • No registration
  • No insurance
  • No license plate

E-Bikes, Alcohol & DUI in Louisiana

Can I get a DUI on an e-bike?

Louisiana's DWI statute is written around operating a motor vehicle. E-bikes are generally classified as bicycles under Louisiana law, and most legal commentary suggests traditional bicycle DUI charges do not apply in the same way.

That said, riding any bike while impaired can still lead to other charges (public intoxication, reckless operation, dangerous behavior) and is unsafe for you and everyone around you.

This is not legal advice. Laws and enforcement practices change. When in doubt, don't ride after drinking.
