Signature Rail-Trail

Tammany Trace

One of Louisiana's premier paved rail-trails. 31 miles of smooth path from Slidell to Covington — perfect for e-bike cruising, training rides, and family adventures.

Slidell ⇄ Covington, LA
31 miles (one way)
Easy • Mostly flat

Overview

The Tammany Trace is a converted railroad corridor that runs through five communities on the Northshore: Slidell, Lacombe, Mandeville, Abita Springs, and Covington. It's fully paved, relatively flat, and lined with trees, wetlands, and neighborhood access points.

For e-bikes, it doesn't get much better: long, uninterrupted stretches, clear sightlines, and plenty of places to stop for coffee, food, or a quick recharge. It's ideal for Class 1–3 bikes as long as you respect local speed limits and other trail users.

Best Sections for E-Bikes

Mandeville ⇄ Covington

Scenic • Cafés

Popular stretch with shade, bridges, and easy access to downtown Covington and Mandeville. Great option for a half‑day ride with plenty of services.

Slidell ⇄ Lacombe

Longer day ride

Great for fitness rides. Fewer road crossings, longer uninterrupted sections, and a more rural feel. Bring water — services can be more spread out.

Abita Springs Loop

Family friendly

Shorter out‑and‑back segments around Abita Springs are perfect for families and new riders. Easy parking and a nice downtown to explore after your ride.

E-Bike Etiquette & Regulations

Class 1–3 e-bikes are generally welcomed, but keep speeds reasonable (15–18 mph max when others are around).

Use a bell or call out "on your left" when passing. Slow down near families and crowded trailheads.

Lights and reflectors are a must for early morning or evening rides. Parts of the Trace are shaded and can get dark quickly.

Check the latest rules on the official Tammany Trace or St. Tammany Parish websites — policies can change.

Pro Tips

  • Start in Mandeville or Covington if you want the most restaurant and coffee options.
  • Summer humidity is real — bring more water than you think you'll need.
  • Plan your turnaround point so you still have battery left for the ride back.
